The First Encounter is a bespoke Light-Art installation conceived for a contemporary mosque, translating the significance of the first revelation into an abstract composition of light, material, and movement. The concept explores the transformation of knowledge into light, where individual elements come together as a greater whole, reflecting a journey from contemplation to faith and spiritual elevation.

Extending 12 by 5 metres across the main prayer hall and rising 6 metres in height, the installation comprises 1,491 bespoke glass and metal elements, incorporating commissioned Kufic calligraphy within intricately fret-cut metal pieces. Movement and ascension shape the composition, while transparency, reflection, and light create an ethereal presence within the architectural space.

Designed, engineered, and delivered by Vann-FID, The First Encounter was realized through close collaboration with the client team, whose engagement throughout the process contributed to the integrity of the final work. Bringing cultural narrative, contemporary design, and precise craftsmanship together, the installation received industry recognition with a shortlist for Best Use of Lighting in Interior Design at the CID Awards 2026: MENA.
